SAVANNAH - The Drayton Tower, a modern building with green-tinted windows, is considered a downtown eyesore by most in Savannah, home of Georgia's loveliest historic buildings.
But the City Council has voted to place the 51-year-old apartment complex on its Historic Buildings Map, which gives the Drayton Tower the same protection as the city's other architectural gems.
The tower made the list Thursday, along with 239 other downtown buildings.
Robin Williams, chairman of the architectural history department at the Savannah College of Art and Design, says Drayton Towers is one of the best examples in the United States of the dramatic architectural shift that took place following World War Two.
He says it represented a fresh start in a city that embraces its past, using new materials and becoming the first apartment building in Georgia to include air conditioning.
Its inclusion on the Historic Buildings Map means the owner must seek city approval before razing the structure.
