COLUMBUS - A mistrial has been declared in the case of a 19-year-old Columbus man charged in the January 11 shooting death of 14-year-old Anthony Lane after jurors said they were hopelessly deadlocked following 14 hours of deliberations.
Muscogee Superior Court Judge John D. Allen said yesterday that Shawn Christoper Harris would be retried September 16.
Nineteen-year-old Hosiea Sparks, also charged with murder in the case, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter under a plea bargain agreement and received a 20-year prison sentence.
Police said the shooting came after a party was broken up for being too loud. An argument broke out between two groups of young men in a nearby grocery store parking lot and Lane was shot.
Sparks testified that Harris first fired a handgun into the crowd, after which he then fired at least one shot.
