CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Bengals have yet another starting quarterback. He is Gus Frerotte, the Bengals' fifth starting quarterback in the past five years.
The Bengals play their final preseason game Thursday night against the Atlanta Falcons.
Coach Dick LeBeau said Monday he chose Frerotte over last season's starter, Jon Kitna, and backup Akili Smith. The Bengals wound up with the lowest-rated passer in the NFL each of the last two years.
Frerotte outplayed Kitna in a 31-23 preseason loss to New Orleans on Saturday night, taking advantage of the Saints' backup defense in the third quarter. Kitna had to play against New Orleans' starters.
The Bengals haven't gone through a full season without changing quarterbacks since 1996, when Jeff Blake was coming off his Pro Bowl season.
The 31-year-old Frerotte has played for four teams in the last five seasons -- Washington, Detroit, Denver and Cincinnati.
