LAFAYETTE - Tri-State Crematory operator Ray Brent Marsh was released Tuesday evening from the Walker County jail where he may face families angry over charges he discarded 339 bodies.
The 29-year-old Marsh has been in custody since February 17 for allegedly accepting money for cremations but never performing them. He's charged with 398 felony counts, including theft by deception and abuse of a body.
Marsh was released from jail about 6:25 p.m. He did not speak to anyone, getting in his attorney, Ken Poston's, car, and driving to his mother's house.
While Marsh has received several death threats in the months since he's been incarcerated, Sheriff Steve Wilson says police will not protect him beyond the parking lot of the jail and courthouse.
Marsh was held more than five months before bond was granted July 25. But his family needed another month to raise the $39,000 cash portion of his $159,000 bond. He had a property bond of $120,000.
