Georgia man to stand trial on murder charges

By
MILL HALL, PENNSYLVANIA - A 24-year-old Georgia man will stand trial in Pennsylvania on murder and kidnapping charges.

Former Lock Haven University football player Fabian Smart is from Clyo, Georgia. He will be tried on first-, second- and third-degree murder, a count of kidnapping and four counts of criminal conspiracy in the 1999 beating death of 21-year-old Jason McMann.

Clyo is about 30 miles north of Savannah.

Authorities say Smart and 24-year-old Willie Williams Junior of Philadelphia fought with McMann in Lock Haven, took him into the woods about 20 miles from town, beat him again and left him to die.

Clinton County prosecutors say they have struck agreements with Williams, who also was charged, and with Jermaine Ballard and Quincy Teel, who were not charged. Court records say Ballard and Teel helped load McMann's body into Smart's car.

Smart was a student at Lock Haven University and a free safety on the football team.
