CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE - The FBI will investigate an arrest by Georgia deputies who are shown on videotape throwing punches and swinging a nightstick at a man who had been struck by a patrol car during a chase.
James McJunkin, senior resident FBI Special Agent for the Northern District of Georgia, said the federal agency would work with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in gathering information about the May 31 arrest.
McJunkin told the Chattanooga, Tennessee, Times Free Press, ``We're going to launch an investigation with the Department of Justice.''
Catoosa County Sheriff Phil Summers said the arresting deputy, Jimmy Stockard, was placed on administrative leave with pay, the second time Stockard has been suspended since the May 31 arrest.
He said Stockard would remain on leave until the GBI and FBI complete their investigation.
The sheriff said he conducted an internal investigation in early June and placed Stockard on suspension without pay for about a month for failing to control the patrol car and for ``the method of the arrest.''
Investigators said 30-year-old Shane Edwards Rogers of Tunnel Hill, Georgia, was arrested following a chase that began in Chattanooga about 1 a.m. May 31 and ended about 20 minutes later in Whitfield County, Georgia.
