Majette counseled by Alabama candidate

By
WASHINGTON - Three days after defeating Alabama Representative Earl Hilliard in a Democratic runoff, Artur Davis phoned another black candidate in Georgia who, like Davis, was opposed by virtually all blacks in Congress.

There are plenty of similarities between Davis' plight and that of Denise Majette, a former state court judge running against Representative Cynthia McKinney, a Georgia Democrat. But if Majette is to do what Davis already has, she may have to find another way.

Both Majette and Davis are running in urban districts that are predominantly black and Democratic. Both are challenging lawmakers supported by the Congressional Black Caucus but who carry plenty of baggage, from alleged ethical misdeeds to controversial statements. And both challengers are largely backing Israel in the Mideast conflict while the incumbents are outspoken Palestinian defenders.

According to Political Moneyline, a Web site that tracks campaign fund raising, about 97 percent of Majette's itemized contributions have come from Georgia. By comparison, Davis and McKinney received nearly 79 percent of their funds from outside the state, with 59 percent for Hilliard.

Majette had raised nearly one-half million dollars so farduring the campaign, but at the beginning of July, only about $100,000 was left. McKinney raised more than $511,000 but spent far less, leaving her with nearlyh $463,000. The challenger concedes she might not have enough to advertise in the costly Atlanta television market.
