Son of gold medalist Olga Korbut charged with counterfeiting

By
LAWRENCEVILLE - Federal agents arrested the son of former Olympic gold medalist Olga Korbut on counterfeiting charges in connection with the discovery of more than $35,000 in phony bills.

A Gwinnett County sheriff's deputy found the fake $100 bills in an upstairs room of Korbut's former home in December as he attempted to serve eviction papers to Korbut's ex-husband, Leonid Bortkevich. Bortkevich, however, had already returned to Belarus.

When Richard Bortkevich, 23, returned to Gwinnett County to report to his probation officer Monday afternoon in an unrelated case, he was greeted by U.S. Secret Service agents, said Bill Creel, assistant special agent in charge of the agency's Atlanta field office.

He was charged with possessing and passing counterfeit U.S. currency, Creel said.

Four hours later, Bortkevich's self-described bodyguard, Samuel Todor, was arrested on the same federal charges and taken to the Gwinnett Detention Center in Lawrenceville.

Bortkevich was already serving a five-year probation sentence after pleading guilty in November 2000 to felony forgery and theft charges, court records show.

Korbut, a native of the former Soviet republic of Belarus who won four Olympic gold medals, was not involved in the counterfeiting, Creel said. She coaches at World Class Gymnastics in the Atlanta suburb of Dunwoody.
