Cedartown man looks forward to Peachtree Road Race

CEDARTOWN - South African Krige Schabort almost died 15 years ago, fighting for his country&#39;s army in Angola during the civil war there. <br> <br> A bomb exploded two yards away from him, destroying his legs, some of his small intestine and his left index finger. <br> <br> But Schabort, now a world-class wheelchair racer, says he will soon be making the biggest adjustment of his life to fatherhood. <br> <br> Schabort and his wife Caron, who now live in the northwest Georgia city of Cedartown, are expecting a son in September. The father-to-be says he is looking forward to using his wheelchair to tow his baby. <br> <br> Before fatherhood, Schabort plans to chase another dream: winning the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta on Thursday and the World Championships in France later this month. He said preparing for fatherhood has pushed him to train much harder and resulted in a better racing season. <br> <br> Schabort discovered wheelchair racing during his rehabilitation. His 13-year racing career includes a victory at the 1998 World Championships in the 10,000 meters and silver and bronze medals in the Paralympics. <br> <br> After coming in second in the Boston Marathon twice including this year Schabort has his sights set on Thursday&#39;s Peachtree, which he has never won. <br> <br> Schabort has finished second three times in Atlanta.
