ATLANTA - The Atlanta Thrashers would have liked to have center Bobby Holik added to the roster but knew they probably weren't going to win the battle to get him.
That was confirmed Monday, the first day of the NHL's free-agent signing period. Holik moved from New Jersey to join a New York Rangers team intent on returning to the playoffs.
Holik, a 6-foot-4 center who won two Stanley Cups with the Devils, was an unrestricted agent. He signed a contract reportedly worth $45 million over five years and said last night the only offer he seriously considered was from the Rangers.
