MACON - Every dog has its day, and today belonged to the dogs at Nu-Way Weiners.
The New York Times published an article in today's Dining section that praised the variety of American hot dogs. The article notes that many regional recipes are far superior to the bland, boiled hot dog from New York pushcarts.
Nu-Way Weiners, which has been serving hot dogs in Macon since 1916, won particular praise for having the finest slaw dog in the land. The report also complimented the restaurant's friendly ambiance:
Nu-Way was one of 12 hot-dog restaurants singled out for praise. The others are Fluky's of Chicago; Swanky Franks of Cheshire, Connecticut, Yocco's The Hot Dog King of Allentown, Pennsylvania; and Essie's Original Hot Dog Shop in Pittsburgh.
The hot dog review ran just in time for the July Fourth holiday when Americans are expected to eat about 150 million hot dogs. That's according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council.
The owners of Nu-Way, Jim Cacavias and Spyros Dermatas, are no strangers to hot-dog fame. Their restaurant first came to national attention in the June 1999 P-B-S television documentary ``A Hot Dog Story.''
Two years ago, Money magazine called the restaurant -- quote -- ``the definitive downtown hot dog lunch venue.'' Southern Living and Gourmet Magazine also have paid tribute to Nu-Way's way with cole slaw and hot dogs.
Nu-Way has seven outlets in Macon, three in Warner Robins and one in Fort Valley.
