NEWNAN - A 19-member law enforcement panel has recommended revoking a Coweta County police chief's certification as an officer.
The recommendation, released earlier this week, was based on the Georgia Peace Officers and Standard Training Council's decision that Newnan Police Chief Ronny Williams ``engaged in unprofessional, unethical, deceptive or deleterious conduct or practices harmful to the public'' and that he ``committed an action or omission which is indicative of bad moral character or untrustworthiness.''
Williams, 53, was placed on administrative leave in January following a federal lawsuit filed by a group of women who worked for him. The suit accuses him of sexual harassment, gender-based discrimination and violation of civil rights.
The POST council has discretionary authority under state law to discipline peace officers. Officials said the revocation becomes final in 30 days if Williams does not appeal in writing within 15 days.
