ILA - A Madison County sheriff's deputy was placed on leave Friday after he shot and wounded a man who brandished a butcher knife at his estranged wife.
County authorities went to a rural home late Thursday after reports that 42-year-old Mark Rice was threatening the woman with the knife.
Rice reportedly lunged at the deputy, who shot him in the upper leg. The deputy -- who was not hurt -- was placed on routine leave. He was not identified.
Sheriff Clayton Lowe says Rice, who also suffered a self-inflicted knife wound to his throat, is expected to recover. When he gets out of the hospital, Rice will face several assault and stalking charges.
