The New York-New Jersey MetroStars said an MRI performed in Los Angeles Tuesday detected both a torn meniscus and a sprain of the medial collateral ligament in the knee. <br>

Mathis was injured in a 3-2 win over the Columbus Crew on Saturday. <br>

MetroStars general manager Nick Sakiewicz said Mathis is scheduled for surgery next Wednesday. It probably will sideline him 3-5 weeks.
