ATLANTA - Atlanta Braves announcer Skip Caray expects to return to the broadcast booth on July 18 after angioplasty to clear an artery.
The Braves departed Wednesday for a six-game road trip to Montreal and Chicago without Caray, who underwent the procedure on Monday one week after the return of fellow Braves broadcaster Don Sutton following surgery to remove a cancerous kidney.
Caray credited Sutton for his decision to have a body scan Friday that revealed an artery that was 96 percent blocked, putting him at risk for a heart attack. The growth on Sutton kidney was detected through a body scan.
``I owe Don a glass of wine, because this wouldn't have been discovered until after the season,'' Caray told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The angioplasty, in which a tiny balloon is inflated in the artery to open blood flow, was performed by Dr. Charles Wickliffe at Piedmont Hospital.
Caray, son of the late Chicago Cubs' broadcaster Harry Caray, is in his 27th season in the Braves' booth. He said he planned to return to work for a home game against the Florida Marlins next Thursday.
