Beat falls to fifth place after loss to CyberRays

By
SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA - Katia's two second-half goals completed the San Jose CyberRays' 3-1 come-from-behind WUSA win over the Atlanta Beat on Wednesday.

San Jose, winless in its previous three games, improved to 6-5-3 (21 points) and moved into a third-place tie with the Washington Freedom.

Atlanta, playing without star forward Charmaine Hooper and starting goalkeeper Briana Scurry, fell to 6-7-1 (19 points) for fifth place.

The win was San Jose's first over Atlanta, which lost the WUSA championship to the CyberRays on penalty kicks last year. Because the title game is officially considered a tie, San Jose's record in the series is now 1-4-2.

The defending champions' last win was a 3-0 victory in an exhibition game with the W-League's Memphis Mercury on June 25. Their last league win was a 4-3 decision against New York on June 15.

Atlanta took a 1-0 lead in a listless first half played in 92-degree heat. Homare Sawa headed home Nancy Augustyniak's cross in the third minute.

San Jose roared back in the second half, with Katia scoring in the 51st and 68th minutes and Tisha Venturini-Hoch scoring in the 61st. The Beat's normally strong defense fell apart under the CyberRays' attack, which began when Katia snaked around Atlanta defender Sharolta Nonen and fired a curving shot past backup Atlanta keeper Melanie Wilson.

Venturini-Hoch's diving header off Sissi's free kick gave San Jose a 2-1 lead before Katia curved another shot around Wilson to cap the scoring. The goal was the Brazilian striker's 10th of the season. Venturini-Hoch's was her third this year.
