SAVANNAH - It took only a week this time for the ``Moon River'' signs to disappear.
The Friends of Johnny Mercer society wanted to honor the memory of the Savannah native and songwriter by posting the small green signs over the actual Moon River.

The signs, which feature Mercer's silhouette, a copy of his signature and the words ``Moon River,'' have been stolen four other times in recent years.

And the two latest signs were gone even before the group knew they had been put up by the state Department of Transportation.

``I'd keep looking every day to see if they were up,'' said David Oppenheim, president of the society. ``Some people just have to spoil something nice for everybody.''

The organization spent $300 on the signs and planned to invite the Mercer family to an official unveiling.

``There could be 100 reasons why they were taken,'' said Eddie Holsey, assistant area engineer for the DOT. ``I couldn't think of one.''

One sign was found Wednesday afternoon abandoned in the mud.
The group, which educates students about Mercer and his music, just wanted something to remind the city of the songwriter's legacy.
``There's an auditorium and a boulevard named after Johnny in the islands. We thought that was inadequate,'' said Ralph Price, vice president of the organization. ``We think his contributions have not been recognized in his own hometown. We're trying to rectify that.''
