MARIETTA - A 34-year-old member of the Georgia National Guard in Marietta is accused of molesting youths who joined military-style groups designed to encourage children to join the military one day.

Scott Lombardi was charged Friday with several child molestation and sodomy charges after a monthlong investigation.

Lombardi is accused of molesting an undisclosed number of youths through one of two organizations -- the Civil Air Patrol or the Forward Academy.

The Civil Air Patrol is a volunteer organization for pilots and children who search for downed aircraft. The Forward Academy was an organization invented by Lombardi under the pretense of encouraging youth to join the National Guard.

Neither organization had any affiliation with the Georgia National Guard, although the Forward Academy met on the Guard's grounds.

Police did not describe the suspected abuse or say how many children may have been involved.

Lombardi has been a member of the Georgia Army National Guard for six years.

According to Georgia Department of Defense, Lombardi worked full-time as a non-commissioned officer with recruiting and retention for about two of those years.
