HEFLIN, ALABAMA - An Alabama sheriff's deputy wounded in a shooting during a traffic stop remains hospitalized in Birmingham. <br>

Thirty-four-year-old Cleburne County Sheriff's Deputy Gary Howell was shot once in the face and once in the ribs. The shooting occurred near Fruithurst, Alabama, early Saturday morning. <br>

Police continue to search for a 47-year-old suspect in the shooting. <br>

Howell and reserve deputy Arlin Ashley stopped a pickup truck bearing a dealer tag. <br>
<br>
The pickup truck didn't have tail lights. Authorities say the driver fired on the officers, hitting Howell. Ashley was not injured. <br>
<br>
Howell was airlifted to the Birmingham hospital. <br>
<br>
Assisting Alabama authorities in the search are Georgia deputies from Haralson, Carroll and Polk counties.
