PARIS - Jennifer Capriati started slowly but finished in a hurry Saturday, winning 11 of the last 12 games to beat Evie Dominikovic 6-3, 6-1 and make the fourth round at the French Open.

Top-seeded Capriati, the defending champion, double faulted and committed three unforced errors to lose her serve on the very first game of the match.

She trailed 3-1 and then went on a run against Dominikovic, ranked No. 109 in the world, who finished with 42 unforced errors - eight more than Capriati.

Also making the round of 16 Saturday was seventh-seeded Jelena Dokic, who raced to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Elena Likhovtseva.

On Friday, American Chanda Rubin advanced to the round of 16. Her next opponent is a familiar one: Venus Williams.

``She's been winning so quickly and so easily, I'm probably not awake at that time,'' Rubin said of Williams.

Williams has surrendered just 12 games in three straight-set victories at the French Open, working her way to the round of 16 and ensuring that she will regain the No. 1 spot in the rankings.

Andre Agassi and Serena Williams also played third-round matches Saturday.

Rubin quietly advanced by beating seeded opponents in Barbara Schett (16) and Anne Kremer (23) to get there. She's twice been a quarterfinalist at the French Open, including 2000, but couldn't play last year.

``The first thing I wanted was my health,'' said Rubin, who had surgery to repair torn cartilage in her left knee twice over the past 17 months.

``It's frustrating, definitely frustrating to know I needed a second surgery,'' she said. ``I always kept sight of what I wanted to do.''

Rubin, ranked 45th, showed her ability on clay last week in just her third tournament this year, finishing second to Monica Seles at Madrid. It was her first final in 19 months.

Now she meets Williams, who holds a 6-1 lead in their head-to-head meetings, including six straight victories. Venus' latest victim was No. 31 Rita Grande, who fell 6-1, 6-4 Friday in just 52 minutes.

Rubin made it clear after a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kremer that she won't be taking the court against Venus just looking for a workout.

``It's not worth going out in a match if you don't think you can win,'' Rubin said. ``I'm gonna need all my tennis.''

Already in the round of 16 is Clarisa Fernandez, who pulled off the tournament's biggest upset so far by beating No. 4 Kim Clijsters, last year's runner-up, 6-4, 6-0.

Other round-of-16 matchups include: No. 6 Seles vs. No. 11 Daniela Hantuchova, No. 13 Elena Dementieva vs. Fernandez, and No. 10 Amelie Mauresmo vs. Paola Suarez.

Top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt next faces No. 15 Guillermo Canas, who beat 1998 French Open winner Carlos Moya in a match interrupted Friday when police evacuated Court 1 because of an unattended briefcase in the stands. A bomb squad blew open the case, didn't find anything worrisome, and fans were allowed back in an hour later.

Other men's fourth-round pairings set Friday: three-time champion Gustavo Kuerten vs. No. 20 Albert Costa, No. 3 Tommy Haas vs. No. 22 Andrei Pavel, and two-time finalist Alex Corretja vs. Mariano Zabaleta.
