ATLANTA - The first rainout in Turner Field history halted Tuesday night's game between the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves, a matchup of the top two teams in the NL East.
The start of the game was delayed 1 hour, 11 minutes by heavy rain, then another line of severe thunderstorms halted play with the Mets leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning.
The showers never let up, finally forcing umpires to call the game after a delay of 1:15. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sept. 10.
Turner Field, which opened for baseball in 1997, had never endured a rainout even with all the thunderstorms that are a staple of the hot Georgia summers. The field is equipped with a computerized drainage system that allows it to quickly soak up large amounts of water.
The Mets scored in the first against Jason Marquis. Timo Perez led off with a walk, moved to second on a grounder and scored on Roberto Alomar's single to left.
Mo Vaughn also singled, but Marquis struck out John Valentin to escape further trouble.
Before the Braves came to bat in their half of the first, several banks of lights went out along the left- and right-field lines. The team said a power outage near the stadium knocked out the lights, but play resumed after a delay of just 12 minutes.
When the lights came back on, Atlanta squandered a chance to tie it up. Shawn Estes walked Julio Franco and Gary Sheffield with one out, but Chipper Jones popped out to short and Andruw Jones struck out swinging.
The Braves have a 2.5-game lead over the Mets, who dropped into a tie for second with Florida. The Marlins beat Philadelphia 5-0.
