Man accidentally released from Nevada jail arrested in Atlanta

ATLANTA - A West African man was arrested Wednesday in Atlanta - three months after being accidentally released from an immigration detention center in Las Vegas, according to a local television station.

Federal authorities identified the man as Papa Mamour Keita of Senegal, WSB-TV reported late Wednesday. He initially was detained by border guards in El Paso, Texas. It was believed that Keita entered the U.S. illegally, the Atlanta station said.

Keita was being held by authorities for further questioning. A first appearance hearing was scheduled Thursday in U.S. Magistrate Court.

Texas officials said they found on him two phony Georgia driver's licenses and a manual on hauling hazardous materials. The El Paso Border Patrol thought that was suspicious and sent him to a detention center in Las Vegas with instructions that he not be released on bond until the case could be investigated.

Keita, who is in his late 30s, was missing for three months after his release, according to federal agents.

``I am confident that the INS here did what they were supposed to do,'' said Leticia Zamarripa, an INS official in El Paso, Tx. ``Now what we have to do is find out what happened when the case was transferred to the Phoenix district.''

Russell Ahr of the Immigration and Naturalization Service in Phoenix told WSB-TV that INS agents acted properly and that if a mistake was made it was by an immigration judge.

Court documents said Keita told authorities that he had lived and worked in Atlanta and had recently been hired to haul hazardous materials, and that was why he had the manuals.
