ATLANTA - One of the two charter schools approved by the state Board of Education won't be opening in August.
Odyssey Charter School in Coweta County got a charter from the state school board in June 2001. But the school has not found a suitable, affordable building.

``When you don't have a building, you don't have a school,'' said Cammy Tidwell, president of Odyssey's governing board.

Tidwell said the school has considered several options, including placing trailers on land leased for $1 a year.

But the school received a $200,000 implementation grant to get started not enough to cover the costs required for capital improvements.
Odyssey and the Charter Conservatory for Liberal Arts and Technology in Bulloch County were approved under a 2000 law designed to make it easier for start-up charters to get off the ground.
The law allows start-up schools that are rejected for charter status by their local school boards to appeal to the state board.
Charter Conservatory has found a location and plans to open in August.
