SAVANNAH - A sewage spill overflowed into a marsh late Monday about 15 feet off Islands Expressway, according to officials.
The spill was reported about 6:45 p.m. in a line between Oatland Island and the Wilmington River, said Jim Laplander, director for sewer conveyance and water distribution for the Savannah Water and Sewer Bureau.
The line, installed in the late 1980s, is a major one, serving Wilmington and Whitemarsh islands, he said.
It was unclear how much sewage seeped into the marsh. Workers tried to repair the line through the night.
Authorities closed one eastbound lane of traffic on Islands Expressway while the line was repaired. The work backed up traffic for at least one hour, officials said.
