Fort Benning soldier arrested in explosives theft

FORT BENNING - A soldier stationed at Fort Benning was arrested Friday on charges related to the theft of 300 sticks of high-grade explosives from a paving company in Columbus earlier this year. <br> <br> Army Specialist Ricky Todd Godsey, 23, was arrested on charges of felony theft by taking and possession of destructive devices charges, the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reported. <br> <br> Authorities said Godsey, of Watauga, Tenn., was one of at least three people involved in the theft. Godsey was bound over to Muscogee County Superior Court on $110,000 bond Friday morning. <br> <br> Calls to Fort Benning late Friday afternoon were not immediately returned. <br> <br> Last month, authorities recovered 275 pounds of stolen explosives in a wooded area on the grounds of Fort Benning. <br> <br> Almost 150 sticks of ammonium nitrate, stored in five 55-pound boxes and used to clear rock during road construction, were missing from Robinson Paving Co. in nearby Columbus. Authorities discovered the explosives were missing in May, but Columbus police Maj. Ricky Boren said they could have been taken as early as mid-March. <br> <br> Ammonium nitrate is the explosive used to bomb the federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995.
