ATHENS - Georgia's football team is building some chemistry while helping to build a house.
Players and coaches started work on the Habitat for Humanity home April 13, joining area companies ReMax and Homebanc Mortgage. It should be finished July 14.
Each Saturday, a group of about 15 people from the football program works an eight-hour shift at the house.
The team got involved with the program through John Brantley, a former Georgia player who's now the Athens branch manager for Homebanc.
Brantley, who played professionally for three teams, including Joe Gibbs' Washington Redskins, asked coach Mark Richt about getting the football program involved.
Habitat for Humanity acquires the land for all its homes, and each one costs about $50,000. A sponsor -- such as Homebanc and ReMax -- initially pays for the home, which then is given to an area family.
An interest-free loan is paid off monthly, usually over a 20- to 25-year period.
