FAR HILLS - Jack Nicklaus has withdrawn from this week's U.S. Senior Open because of a recurring back problem.
"I am better but not good enough to play golf," Nicklaus said Monday from Florida. "I have had great improvement but not good enough to play in a four-day tournament."
J.C. Snead, who won the Senior PGA Tour's Greater Baltimore Classic on Sunday, has also withdrawn from the Open, USGA spokesman Craig Smith said Monday.
The U.S. Senior Open begins Thursday at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.
The same back injury also forced the 62-year-old Nicklaus to withdraw from the Senior PGA Championship after two rounds.
Nicklaus has played in just three competitive tournaments this year. He has not won a Senior PGA Tour event in six years.
