ALPHARETTA - Officials said an annexation that could double the size of Alpharetta may have to wait until next year.
City Administrator Bob Regus said Monday that he had not seen any official confirmation of the delay request, but he said it appeared the annexation was ``unofficially'' on hold.
``Because this is a long-term question that's being addressed, we want the people who are addressing it to be the people who are going to be there for the long term,'' said George Ragsdale, who is on the committee supporting annexation.
Last week, Alpharetta Mayor Chuck Martin resigned to run for a state House seat. His interim replacement, Councilman Arthur Letchas, was expected to qualify Tuesday to run for mayor removing him from his council office under state law.

Martin's successor will be chosen in August, but Letchas' council seat will remain vacant until November.
Residents of unincorporated north Fulton proposed the annexation in July 2001. It would add 11,000 acres to the city and increase its population to about 45,000.
A new referendum date has not been proposed.
