ACLU challenges law which makes sex outside of marriage illegal

ATLANTA - The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation filed a brief with the state Supreme Court on Tuesday challenging Georgia&#39;s statute which outlaws sexual intercourse between unmarried couples. <br> <br> In 1998, the court overturned a controversial anti-sodomy law, saying it violated the Georgia Constitution&#39;s guarantee of a right to privacy. <br> <br> Georgia ACLU attorney Beth Littrell said in a statement, ``We hope this case finally gets the state of Georgia out of our bedrooms. Most unmarried people would be outraged if they knew that their private, consensual expressions of intimacy turned them into criminals.&#39;&#39; <br> <br> According to the 2000 census, nearly 150,000 Georgians live together as couples. <br> <br> The American Family Association, based in Tupelo, Mississippi, said the challenge was to marriage, not an antiquated law. <br> <br> AFA attorney Bryan Brown said, ``This nation must quickly decide whether we have the government&#39;s best interest in preserving traditional marriage. It has served Western civilization well for two-thousand years, and mankind as a whole quite well for a millennium before that.&#39;&#39;
