MACON - A Bibb County coroner's jury has ruled that a February car accident that killed an inmate on a work detail was an accident.
The five-person jury heard about an hour of testimony Wednesday before deliberating about 20 minutes and making their decision.
Sixty-two-year-old Embrey Johnson died at The Medical Center of Central Georgia on February 14, one day after he was struck by a car while working with an inmate crew on a Macon highway.
Evidence presented at the inquest indicated that Vickie Curry of Macon was driving her car about 40 miles per hour in a 55-miles-per-hour speed zone when she saw Johnson in the road. She honked her horn and swerved to avoid a collision, but Johnson moved the same way she swerved and was struck by the vehicle.
Johnson had been in a Macon jail since January 15 for violating his probation. Court records showed he failed to pay his mandated fees and did not report to the probation office as directed for a 1997 conviction for driving with a revoked license and for driving under the influence.
