Capt. J.D. Yeager of the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office said a Swifty Mart was robbed about 4:30 p.m. Friday. The suspect fled the scene and got onto Interstate 75, heading south.
While being chased by a deputy, Yeager said, the suspect crossed the median and drove south in the middle of the northbound lane of the interstate, causing several accidents.
After leaving I-75, the man wrecked on a dirt road and fled on foot before being surrounded by deputies who used pepper spray to subdue him, Yeager said.
The suspect, still trying to escape, jumped into a Georgia State Patrol car and tried to flee, but crashed into a civilian vehicle. Yeager said that sometime during the process of his flight, the suspect was shot by a law enforcement officer.
