AUSTIN, TEXAS - Lady Bird Johnson was hospitalized in fair condition Saturday after suffering a mild stroke that left her unable to speak, officials said.
The 89-year-old former first lady was upbeat and aware of her surroundings, said Dr. Rodney Horton, Johnson's cardiologist. He said she was resting comfortably and not in pain.
``We are still not certain how permanent this is or how severe this is,'' Horton said. ``At the present time, she is fully understanding of everything that is being said, can nod appropriately, but she is unable to find the word.''
Johnson was taken Thursday to Seton Medical Center after she awoke from a nap at her home and had trouble speaking and swallowing medication. Her doctor said she appears to have suffered damage to a small area on the left side of her brain.
The former first lady was expected to remain in the hospital through the weekend for observation and additional tests.
Daughter Luci Baines Johnson said the only words her mother has spoken since arriving at the hospital were ``thank you,'' to George Christian, a close family friend who served as press secretary under President Johnson. The former president died in 1973.
Lady Bird Johnson had been admitted to the same hospital in 1999 after fainting at her home. In 1993, she suffered what was described as a minor stroke.
She remains active in the family business, the privately held LBJ Holding Co., but has transferred leadership duties of the broadcasting company to her daughter.
