Coke bottler introduces slimmer box for 12-pack can cases

ATLANTA - Shoving soda cans into a cramped refrigerator could become simpler courtesy of the ``fridge pack,'' a slimmer, deeper 12-pack box the world's largest Coca-Cola bottler introduced Wednesday.

Coca-Cola Enterprises is switching to a box that stacks six rows two cans deep, figuring a longer box will fit better in U.S. refrigerators. Initially, they will be sold in Chicago and Georgia, joining two smaller Coke bottlers that have already switched in several Southern states.

But the box redesign is hardly rooted in fridge aesthetics -- if all your soda's chilled, you'll probably drink more.

The fridge pack was born two years ago in Australia where tests proved successful. Then last summer, Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated of Charlotte, North Carolina introduced the box in the Carolinas. Consolidated spokesman Lauren Steele said the fridge pack was credited for a third of the three percent sales growth the company had last year.

Coca-Cola United of Birmingham, Alabama also is changing to the fridge pack, part of a trend officials at Coca-Cola North America expect to spread among the more than seven-dozen U.S. Coke bottlers.

The three bottlers together represent more than 80 percent of Coke's U.S. bottling capacity.
