Past, present Hawks to visit Ackworth Elementary

ATLANTA - The students at Acworth Elementary School have earned a special Atlanta Hawks Fast Break for Reading assembly hosted by Hawks guard Dion Glover and former Hawks greats Dominique Wilkins and Jim Washington.

Team mascots Harry the Hawk and SkyHawk as well as members of the Atlanta Hawks Dance Team, will also be on hand.

The event is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7 in the school gymnasium. Following the assembly, Glover, Wilkins, Washington and other members of the Hawks All-Star Reading Team will head to individual classrooms to read to the students. The Fast Break for Reading initiative is sponsored by Philips Electronics, Sprite and VoiceStream Wireless.

The Acworth Elementary students won the top prize by reading in excess of 3,500 books this school year, more than any other participating metro-Atlanta school. Overall, the Fast Break for Reading program impacted over 1,500 students from 130-plus metro-Atlanta elementary schools. The students combined to read over 22,000 books during the school year.

The Fast Break for Reading program runs from October through March and is one component of the Atlanta Hawks Read to Achieve campaign, the centerpiece of the NBA's community outreach program. For every 14 books each student read, he or she received two tickets to an Atlanta Hawks home game at Philips Arena and the school which read the most combined books won the special assembly and visit from the Hawks.

"These kids deserve a reward for all the hard work they put in throughout the year," said Wilkins. "The assembly is to show them that their work did not go unnoticed."
