DECATUR - Mexico's consulate has asked DeKalb County police for the official report on the death of a 19-year-old Mexican national who was shot by an off-duty officer at a Cinco de Mayo festival.
The county police sergeant said Pablo Gutierrez pointed a handgun in his direction after a violent altercation between two groups at Sunday's festival, which drew thousands of people to a shopping center.
The officer, who had been hired to help provide security, was placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation. He was not identified.
Witnesses said the two groups of teen-agers got into a scuffle, and when security officers asked them to leave, they crossed the street and started shooting at each other.
Mexico's consul general in Atlanta, Remedios Gomez Arnau, said Gutierrez came to the area about six months ago from the state of Guerrero and was living with relatives.
``They came here very early in the morning to ask for our help to send the body to Mexico,'' she said Monday. She said the consulate wanted the report of the investigation by the police internal affairs division.
The manager of the shopping center, Arturo Adonay, said the festival drew about 5,000 people.
He said organizers had hired 15 DeKalb police officers and about 30 private guards to control the crowd.
