DAWSONVILLE - A dream, three years in the works, was realized Tuesday afternoon when organizers broke ground on a new Catholic college in Dawson County.
Southern Catholic College was the idea of Tom Clements, who noted that there were no Catholic colleges in Georgia or South Carolina. Clement said the school was just a dream over three years ago when he sold a software company and God laid it on his heart.
He said over 400 people turned out for Tuesday's groundbreaking. "A tremendous amount of enthusiasm, a lot of buy in, a lot of people excited about the opportunity," Clements said.
Clements said one of the goals is to prepare moral and ethical leaders. "We want to do that in a safe environment, that's a walking campus, that's a Christian campus. It's an environment where kids should feel safe and parents should feel that their children are not going to necessarily lose their faith when they go away to school, as well as have a great education."
Clements said by next July organizers hope to have four new buildings on the site off Georgia 400. He said they'll open in August of 2003 with 150 freshman. "So far we have over 2000 inquiries into our database," Clements said.
He said the first four majors will be humanities, English, business and psychology with more added each year.
