Former Georgia basketball player facing felony charges

ATHENS - Former University of Georgia basketball player Arlando Bennett has been charged with criminal attempt to commit rape. <br> <br> Bennett, 31, a 6-foot-10 center who played at Georgia from 1989-1993, was arrested and charged Monday. He was released on $5,000 bond. <br> <br> According to court documents, Bennett is accused of entering the bedroom of a woman he knows without her permission and standing beside her bed with his pants down while she slept on Jan. 18. The act, according to the warrant, ``constituted a substantial step toward the commission of (rape).&#39;&#39; <br> <br> Bennett played professional basketball for four years in Taiwan and China and played last season in Austria before retiring from the game. He returned to Athens and was attending Georgia pursuing a degree in social work. <br> <br> Criminal intent to commit rape is a felony with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. A hearing for Bennett is scheduled May 28 in Clarke Magistrate Court.
