DECATUR - DeKalb District Attorney J. Tom Morgan said his office will investigate the death of a Mexican national shot by an off-duty officer at a Cinco de Mayo festival.
``Anytime there is a shooting that involves police, we will investigate it,'' Morgan said.
Pablo Gutierrez Pano, 19, was fatally shot by a county police sergeant hired to help provide security at the May 5 festival. Organizers had hired 15 DeKalb police officers and about 30 private guards to control the crowd. About 5,000 attended.
Witnesses said two groups of teen-agers got into a scuffle, and when security officers asked them to leave, they crossed the street and started shooting at each other. Gutierrez pointed a handgun at police after being told to stop, DeKalb police spokeswoman Pam Kunz wrote in a statement.
Remedios Gomez Arnau, Mexico's consul general in Atlanta, asked for an investigation after hearing varying accounts from witnesses.

``Our concern is that we have heard two different versions of the event,'' Gomez Arnau said. ``We want an independent investigation to help us find out what really happened.''
Morgan has assigned a Spanish-speaking investigator to work with the consulate to interview witnesses again. The officer, who was placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation, has not been identified.
Gutierrez came to the area about six months ago from the state of Guerrero and was living with relatives.
