VALDOSTA - Investigators found two pipe bombs and potential bomb-making materials Friday at the home of a man being held in the Lowndes County Jail on a theft charge, authorities said.

Detectives learned of the alleged bombs while investigating the theft case against William Gene Wood, sheriff's Capt. J.D. Yeager said.

Wood, 21, will be formally charged with possession of explosive devices on Monday, Yeager said.

He said investigators were unsure what, if anything, Wood planned to do with the bombs, described as 8- to 10-inch pieces of PVC pipe, capped on both ends. Wood told them he was simply experimenting with information obtained from the Internet.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation bomb squad detonated the devices Friday afternoon. Yeager said the search also uncovered other suspicious materials, including gunpowder and CO2 cartridges, which can be used as bomb casings.
