ATLANTA - Metro Atlanta will be without a major pro tennis event for the first time in 25 years with the demise of the Atlanta Challenge.
The tournament, won in 2001 by Andy Roddick at Atlanta Athletic Club, was terminated on Tuesday. It was sold by Clear Channel Entertainment to a private group that plans to move it to Buenos Aires.
The sale was prompted by the failure to secure a title sponsor and poor attendance, said Donald Dell, the tournament founder in 1985 and a Clear Channel senior vice president.
The Atlanta tournament was first played at the Omni as an eight-player exhibition. It became an ATP tour stop in 1992 and was played on clay at Atlanta Athletic Club since 1993. Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras are among the former champions.
