Sweaters in May? South shivers under unusual blast of Canadian air

ATLANTA - Georgians are waking up to chilly temperatures Tuesday morning thanks to a cold spell passing through from the north. <br> <br> With summer just a month away, Southerners fired up furnaces and dug out sweaters yesterday as a blast of Canadian air sent temperatures plunging to wintry lows. <br> <br> Records fell from Mississippi to the Carolinas Monday, flirting with the freezing mark in some places. Forecasters said the chilly air will stick around through at least the middle of the week. <br> <br> The cold snap is the latest instance of wacky weather in the eastern half of the country this year. <br> <br> The winter was mild, but was followed by a March snowstorm blamed for more than 20 deaths from Texas to the Great Lakes. Then last month, temperatures soared to record highs along the East Coast.
