Seminoles put Tigers into loser's bracket at ACC tourney

ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA - Matt Lynch won his eight consecutive start, and Ryan Barthelemy drove in four runs as Florida State beat Clemson 9-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament Thursday. <br>

It was Florida State's 19th consecutive victory. <br>
<br>
Lynch (13-1) went the distance, allowing four runs and seven hits. All of the runs and four of the hits came in the second inning. <br>
<br>
Barthelemy went 3-for-5, including a two-run homer in the ninth and extended his hitting streak to 15 games. <br>
<br>
Clemson's Khalil Greene doubled in the eighth and tied John Fishel (Cal State-Fullerton 1982-85) for second place on the NCAA career hits list with 379. The hit also extended Greene's hitting streak to 24 games. <br>

The Seminoles (53-12) earned the top-seed at the tourney after sweeping a three-game series at Clemson (45-13) last weekend. <br>

Stephen Drew had an RBI double as Florida State scored five times in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Mike Futrell and Barthelemy added run-scoring singles. <br>

David Slevin had an RBI single and Robert Valiente hit a run-scoring triple during a four-run, second-inning for Clemson. <br>
<br>
Clemson's Matt Henrie (10-4) gave up five runs and six hits over 4 2-3 innings. He allowed just one hit through four innings.<br>

Stephen Ghutzman had a tiebreaking two-out, pinch-hit RBI double in the 11th inning as Wake Forest beat North Carolina 9-7 in an ACC tournament winners' bracket game Thursday night. <br>

Jeff Ruziecki drew a one-out walk from Chris Maples (0-3), went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ben Ingold and scored on Ghutzman's drive off the right-field wall. <br>
<br>
Nick Blue made it 9-7 with a run-scoring single. <br>
<br>
Wake Forest (44-9-1) and Florida State (53-12) are the only unbeaten teams left in the double elimination tourney. They meet Friday night. <br>

North Carolina (40-18) loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, but failed to score. Maples got a late start from third base on Chad Prosser's line out to center and was thrown out at the plate. <br>
<br>
An eighth-inning RBI single by Wake Forest's Ryan Johnson tied it at 7-all. Johnson reached base seven times. <br>
<br>
Maples and Ryan Blake had run-scoring singles off closer Dave Bush (7-1) in the seventh inning to give North Carolina a 7-6 lead. <br>

Maples also had two sacrifice flys, and has six RBIs in two tourney games. <br>

Ryder Mathias had a two-run single during a four-run, third inning that gave Wake Forest a 5-1 lead. <br>
<br>
Sean Farrell drove in two runs with a single that got North Carolina within 5-4 in the fourth. <br>
<br>
Mell Adams had a sixth-inning solo home for North Carolina. <br>

Brian Wright homered twice, including a tiebreaking solo shot in the 10th inning, as North Carolina State stayed alive in the ACC tournament by beating Virginia 6-5 in a losers' bracket game Thursday. <br>

Wright's 14th homer of the season came after Virginia had tied it at 5 on Shawn McCleary's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. <br>
<br>
Joe Gaetti had a two-run double, and Wright - who has a 14-game hitting streak drove in a pair with his first homer of the game during a five-run, second-inning to put North Carolina State (33-25) up 5-2. <br>

Robert Word had an RBI single and Mark Reynolds added a run-scoring double in the first inning for Virginia (25-32), which was eliminated from the tourney. <br>
<br>
A two-run homer by Dan Street - his 12th of the season - in the fifth got Virginia within 5-4. <br>
<br>
Winner Ryan Combs (1-1) allowed one run in three innings. Alan Zimmerer (1-3), who allowed Wright's game-winning homer, took the loss. <br>

North Carolina left-hander Mike Prochaska gave up four runs and 11 hits over seven innings. Virginia starter Canon Hickman allowed five runs, five hits and five walks in 7 1-3 innings.
