Georgia suppliers have enough electricity for this summer

ATLANTA - Despite an energy industry slump that has hit parts of the country, Georgians should have plenty of electricity to make it through the hot summer months. <br> <br> Due to reduced recent usage, especially among big industrial customers, and major additions next week at two Georgia power plants, plenty of energy is available. <br> <br> Georgia Power Company, the state&#39;s top electricity supplier with about 1.8 million customers, says it is in the strongest position in years to meet summer electricity demands. <br> <br> Bob Ellsberry, a spokesman for Cobb Electric Membership Corporation, the state&#39;s largest electric cooperative, said the Marietta supplier has wholesale electricity contracts in place to ensure adequate supply to its 165,000 customers. <br> <br> While the collapse of Enron Corporation has forced many independent energy suppliers to put power plant projects on hold in Georgia and across the country, several are going ahead. <br> <br> A generator at Plant Wansley in Roopville, 50 miles southwest of downtown Atlanta in Heard County, is scheduled to begin operations Monday; another Georgia Power unit goes on line the next day in Goat Rock, Alabama, just across the state line from Columbus.
