KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE - Medic Regional Blood Center officials asked for donations Thursday because supplies are depleted after supplying Chattanooga, Tennessee-area hospitals following a fatal 125-vehicle pileup in Georgia last month.
The blood bank serves 26 hospitals in Tennessee and southeast Kentucky. Medic spokeswoman Jeannine McKamey said it sent 95 pints to Blood Assurance in Chattanooga to help victims of the crash on a foggy Interstate 75 in northwest Georgia.
Five people died in the March 15 crash, and at least 39 were taken to hospitals.
Medic already had a shortage before the accident. Regular blood donations have been steady but not enough to offset the loss of the 95 pints.
