POPLARVILLE, Miss. - Police nabbed a woman who allegedly helped her husband break out of jail by shooting a guard and then leading authorities on a high-speed chase that left a second officer wounded.

The escaped inmate, Fredrick Henry Suttle, remained on the loose late Sunday, officials said. His wife, Marie Terrisa Novak, 37, was found by authorities in a wooded area where the couple fled.

Police said blood on the steering wheel of the couple's car and bullet holes in the window suggest Suttle could be wounded.

Suttle and Novak were saying goodbye after a morning visit when the prisoner made his break, officials said. The visit occurred in an area outside the Pearl County jail where visitors speak to inmates through a chain-link fence with a guard nearby.

Deputies said Suttle was chased by jailer William Davis, who caught him and wrestled the inmate to the ground.

As the two were scuffling, deputies say Novak pulled a pistol she smuggled into the jail and allegedly shot the jailer at least once in the leg.

``The officer that was shot, they took his keys to let themselves out of the gate,'' Sheriff Joe Stuart said.

Suttle and Novak then jumped in her car and headed north, firing at the police cruiser of a deputy who was pursuing the couple. Authorities said one bullet went through the cruiser's windshield.

The deputy and the jailer were both taken to hospitals for treatment. The sheriff's office would not release any information on their conditions.

Officials say the couple abandoned their car near the community of Henleyfield and fled into the woods.

``When the female exited the vehicle, she was still firing at the officer,'' Stuart said.

Police set up a command post there and searched for the two with dogs and a helicopter.

Suttle was being held for allegedly running a methamphetamine lab, officials said.
