SHEFFIELD, Ala. - A man died Monday when his riding lawnmower slipped off a bluff and fell about 75 feet down the rocky, tree-lined slope leading to the Tennessee River.
Bobby Holland, 66, died from trauma to his head and other parts of his body, said Colbert County Coroner Joe Morrison. Holland's body came to rest between several jagged rocks. His new red riding lawnmower was trapped several feet above.
Holland was mowing the lawn of a friend who lives in an assisted-living facility in Muscle Shoals. Roy Caddell, 89, had been friends with Holland for more than 30 years.
"Mr. Caddell said he noticed that he hadn't heard the lawn mower in about five minutes and went to look for him," said Paul Atkins, who lives across the street from the accident site. "They started looking around and Mr. Caddell noticed some skid marks leading to the bluff."
Atkins said it appeared the wheels on the mower locked and Holland couldn't get off as he skidded toward the bluff.
"It's a terrible tragedy and a terrible loss for all of us who knew him," Atkins said. "He loves people, and he would go out of his way and do anything he could to help someone."
