FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS - Former Arkansas basketball coach Nolan Richardson is due $3 million in deferred compensation in addition to the $3 million buyout of his contract that resulted from his March 1 firing.
The additional sum, reported by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, is alluded to in a document generated by the university when it was handling Richardson's appeal of his firing.
The brief mention was by university attorney Fred Harrison in a memo in which Richardson's compensation was discussed. It said the ex-coach's ``deferred compensation packages total approximately $3,000,000.''
Harrison would not discuss any additional money to be paid to Richardson.
``The record speaks for itself and says what it says,'' Harrison told the newspaper.
Richardson attorney John Walker would not comment on the compensation.
The newspaper said it learned that the money is to be paid by the Razorback Foundation, the fund-raising arm of the university athletic department, and is due in a lump sum no later than Jan. 1.
Fayetteville campus Chancellor John A. White fired Richardson and the dismissal was upheld two weeks ago by system President B. Alan Sugg. White said Richardson made comments the administration deemed harmful to the university.
