SAN FRANCISCO - The San Francisco Examiner will drop its Sunday edition and replace it with an expanded Friday edition, which will include more weekend sports and entertainment information, the newspaper said.
The move will change the paper's publishing cycle to Monday through Friday mornings. It has not published on Saturday under current ownership.
The Examiner is operating largely on a $66 million, three-year subsidy from the Hearst Corp., former owner of the newspaper.
In 2000, Hearst purchased the San Francisco Chronicle and merged its Examiner staff with the Chronicle's. The Fang family of San Francisco became owners of The Examiner and hired its own staff of writers and editors.
