AUGUSTA - Thousands of golf fans will pour into Augusta over the next few days for the Masters. And hundreds of students will pack their bags and get out of town.

For the first time, Paine College has scheduled its spring break for the week of the major golf tournament. And it's no coincidence.

The college moved spring break, which had been the second week of March, to accommodate students and staff who are working with the tournament, college President Shirley A.R. Lewis said.

Until this year, Paine's spring break coincided with that of other historically black colleges and universities. The switch to Masters week has taken some students by surprise and some of them are teed off.

``Spring break is so late this year that I can't do anything,'' junior Danielle Bishop said. ``If it were earlier I would have gone somewhere.''

Lamont Harris, a junior and an Augusta native, said he was sad that his spring break vacation a trip to Atlanta to shop will cause him to miss the excitement of the tournament.

``Tiger (Woods) will win it all,'' he said.

Paine College has about 500 students who live on campus. Only about 70 are expected to stay in town over the break, said Lisa Washington, assistant to the director of resident life.

Freshmen best friends Lamario Latson and Jonathan Copeland said they planned to travel during the break, regardless of missing the Masters.

``We are loading up the Navigator and taking a road trip like Tom Green,'' Copeland said.

DeMarlo West, a junior, will stay because he has to work but he has other plans.

``I won't just be working because I do plan on attending the Masters,'' he said. ``I have my tickets already.''
