Insects invade Payne City

By
PAYNE CITY - Thirty life-sized insects invaded an art gallery in Payne City, but they weren't there to sting or bite. The pesky bugs were sculptures of junk and scrap, designed to promote recycling programs.

It was the opening of the Junque Yard Bug Sculpture contest, with college students displaying the insects they built. The contest Sunday at Middle Georgia Art Association, was sponsored by Macon Iron & Paper Stock Company.

Macon Iron Vice President Evan Koplin says most of the sculptures are made from material recycled by local businesses.

Students from Central Georgia Technical College, Mercer University, Georgia Southwestern State University and Swainsboro Technical College entered the contest.

This year's entries had just about everything -- a giant-sized cocoon and dragonfly, a tick and an insect creation on wheels called ``Bugs Not From Around Here.''

One group of students created a series of dead bugs and the way they met their fate.

Last year, Macon Iron sponsored a Junque Yard Dawg contest and participants worked around a canine theme.
